PROJECT PROFILE
Rotary Furnace Combustion and Controls Upgrade
Description
PTS was contracted by a forging manufacturer to perform a controls upgrade and overhaul combustion piping on three industrial rotary forge furnaces. The project included addition of rotary encoders to each of the furnaces for tracking furnace table position and modifications to the existing Honeywell controls to calculate and display the position. We designed and built a touch screen operator console and remote control enclosures at each of the furnaces with touchscreen HMI’s. We also modernized the combustion control system by designing a new burner management system and updates to the air and gas piping to meet modern standards.
PTS played a major role in this project to offload the client’s personnel. We provided design drawings for the controls upgrades and new enclosures, used our industrial furnace expertise to design the piping upgrades, purchased all materials for the project, and performed installation contractor bidding for the client. When it came time to install, PTS sent personnel on- site for over six weeks to supervise the installation contractors and ensure the installed system met the design drawings. We also had a controls engineer on-site for system startup and testing to make sure the project met all customer requirements. In the end, we left the client with an upgraded system that was installed on time, within budget, and our resources allowed their personnel to remain focused on their daily jobs.
